ADHO Awards Committee 2008-09 Annual Report
Charles D. Bush, Chair
The ADHO Awards Committee has responsibility for the awards ADHO gives to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to the Digital Humanities. The committee consists of a chair, appointed by the ADHO steering committee, and voting representatives from each constituent organization, appointed by their respective organizations. Additional non-voting members may also be co-opted to facilitate the work of the committee.

Assignments
Initial assignments have been made for the four continuing members of the committee to manage the four awards programs, as indicated above and a plan has been formulated to rotate responsibility for the awards hereafter. Cycles of the three-year awards are managed by each organization representative in turn, with the remaining organization representative and chair then dividing responsibility for the annual awards. Projected assignments for the next 15 years are shown in the accompanying table.
In order to get into the sequence of staggered appointments called for by the protocol, it was decided to schedule reappointment for ALLC in 2010 and SDH/SEMI in 2011, following their terms heading the Busa and Zampolli panels respectively, leaving ACH for reappointment in 2009. Iterations of this sequence are also shown in the table.
Busa Prize — Jean Anderson (ALLC)
In order to make a Busa Prize presentation in 2010 as scheduled, we had to condense the tasks for years one and two into this year. Under the direction of Jean Anderson, the committee published a call for nominations and received eight submissions. Adding nominations from previous cycles gave us a pool of 19 initial candidates. Unfortunately, few of these came with adequate biographic and bibliographic information, but Jean was able to request/research enough to make a short list of eight candidates for further consideration. After more discussion and conversation, a vote was taken and a winner was selected. Jean has since made contact with the winner and received assurance they will gladly accept and fulfill the requirements of the award—their name will be announced at the Opening Plenary session of the Conference.
Zamppoli Prize — Ray Siemens (SDH/SEMI)
The Zamppoli Prize is due to be announced at DH2010 and presented in 2011. Thus the committee, under the direction of Ray Siemens, will turn our attention to the nomination and selection process for this award during 2009-10. We suggest that announcements of the Busa Prize could be followed with mention of the Zampolli Prize and the "next attraction," when appropriate.
Conference Bursaries — Matt Jockers (ACH)
Although a protocol for Conference Bursaries was approved at DH2008, we made several deviations in actual implementation for this first year. Under the direction of Matt Jockers, the committee ultimately received over 20 applications and eventually approved the full complement of 10 awards for the DH2009 Conference:
- Chen Szu-pei, National Taiwan University, “On Building a Full-Text Digital Library of Land Deeds of Taiwan” (paper)
- Maciej Eder, Pedagogical University, Cracow, Poland, “PCA, Delta, JGAAP and Polish Poetry of the 16th and 17th Centuries. Who Wrote the Dirty Stuff?” (paper)
- Joseph Gilbert, University of Virginia, “New World Ordering” (paper)
- Rachel Kraus, Stanford University, “Modulating Style (and Expectations): An Experiment in Narrative Voice in Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury” (poster)
- Jacob Mason-Marshall, Stanford University, “Modulating Style (and Expectations): An Experiment in Narrative Voice in Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury” (poster)
- Henriette Roued Olsen, University of Oxford, “Towards an Interpretation Support System for Reading Ancient Documents” (paper)
- Patrick Shiel, National University of Maynooth, Ireland, “Ghost in the Manuscript: Hyperspectral Text Recovery and Segmentation” (paper)
- Kristen C. Uszkalo, Simon Fraser University, MONK panel organizer, “The Devil and Mother Shipton” (paper)
- Sharon Webb, University of Ireland, Maynooth, “MIHS—Text Mining Historical Sources using Factoids” (paper)
- Matthew Wilkens, Rice University, “Corpus Analysis and Literary History” (paper)
Based on our experience this year, the committee will propose several changes to the protocol during the ADHO Steering Committee meeting.
Fortier Prize — Chuck Bush (ADHO)
Many ideas for the Fortier Prize have been suggested since it was first proposed shortly after Paul's death. A first draft protocol was discussed at the DH2008 meetings in Oulu, but met with a number of objections and concerns. When the Awards Committee was formed, we were tasked to come up with a new proposal for consideration at DH2009 and Chuck Bush took the assignment to lead that effort. Our resulting proposal will be presented at the 2009 ADHO Steering Committee meeting. Pending approval by that committee and ratification by the constituent organizations, we are intending to present the first Fortier Prize at the DH2010 conference and every year thereafter.
